The Certified Agile Coach Training course will help you develop the attitudes and learn the skills of an effective Agile coach. Through the 3 days you will learn and practise coaching, mentoring, and teaching skills in the context of Agile. You will leave the course feeling empowered with skills, models, and styles of working with individuals and teams in order to help them continuously improve, all within an Agile context.

Who the course is for

This course will ideally suit you if you are an Agile coach or aspiring coach, a Scrum Master, project manager, program manager, delivery manager, team lead, development manager, or even team member. You’ll be interested in developing your Agile coaching, mentoring, and teaching skills, and in consciously including more of a coaching style in your work.


This course does not teach the basics of Agile. It is therefore a pre-requisite that you have at least a grounding in the basics of Agile, and at least 6 months’ experience as a practitioner. If you have any queries about your suitability for the course, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Course Content

In this course you will learn about:

The Agile Coaching Context and Mindset.

This differentiates between the core skills of an Agile coach (professional coaching, mentoring, facilitating, teaching, and leading) and Agile practices. We introduce a more expanded view of servant leadership that calls on us to become aware of our own mind set, broaden our thinking and expand our repertoire in order to take up a full range of Agile coaching skills in service of the team and the context.

Responsibilities and Skills of the Coach

Agile coaches need to be clear about their role and the difference (and overlap) between their role and that of others. Here you will discuss potential role conflicts and experience practising self-management when handling potential role conflicts between your role as an Agile coach and your other roles.

Setting Boundaries for Coaching

Setting the stage for a coaching relationship involves clear contracting and designing of alliances. Here we expand on the typical coaching triangle (coach, team, and organisation) and present a wider stakeholder view. You will learn how to design a coaching alliance and how to contract with all parties

Coach as Professional Coach

A coach assumes that team members have an individual and a collective wisdom, and that her job is to elicit the answers within. The main skills taught are listening actively, asking effective questions and following a coaching process. Further topics range from the coaching stance to appreciative inquiry and to creating a culture that works. As this training is particularly experiential, you can expect to learn about your strengths and your own areas for development.

Coach as Mentor

At times an Agile coach needs to impart her Agile expertise and to guide the team by making suggestions, giving advice, instilling practices, and guiding transitions to Agile roles. Along with such changes come fears and resistances and so a framework for working with change is presented. Knowing when to coach and when to mentor is a key skill of an Agile coach, and in this part of the course you will practise the dual art of mentoring and coaching.

Coach as Teacher

Teaching the basics and mind sets of Agile is an activity the Agile Coach performs again and again and is conducted both in and out of the learning situation. There are different learning styles, and you will practise including these in your teaching methods.

Working with Teams

This part of the training focuses on working one-to-many and how best to serve a team. This includes typical dysfunctions (and what the coach can do about them), what happens when people work together over time, groups, teams and high performing teams, Groupthink and working with conflict. Much of the learning here will come through reflecting on our lived experience in this and other groups.

Agile Coaching Circles

Is there any course or certification prerequisite to attend the course and take the certification?

I have proven experience/knowledge in Agile so I'm not interested at the fundamentals course/certification. Is it possible to do/take the course and certification?
Absolutely! We won't be covering the fundamentals of Agile, only coaching and facilitation within an Agile context.

Are both certifications credited just by attending the class?  
By attending the class and participating in all the activities, all participants will be demonstrating their knowledge, skills, and agile mindset.

What is the total cost for both courses plus the certification? At the website I see the text "nominal fee applies", what does that mean?
The certification is currently USD60 per course, which you will purchase (optional) on successful completion of the course. We mention "nominal fee applies" in case the fee changes between now and the time you choose to become certified. It is a once-off fee (no renewal required).

Course Process

Our focus is on learning by doing. Generally speaking, we will introduce a piece of theory, ask you to try this out in an exercise and invite you to reflect on what you have learnt and what this means for you as an Agile coach. We’ll take a coaching approach to our interactions with you, thus modelling the knowledge, skills and attitudes that we are teaching. Our focus will be on what is useful and effective in a given context, rather than on doing things ‘properly’. Finally, we believe that adults learn best when they have a framework to follow, some useful facts, and the freedom to play with these and test them out. We’ll expect you to adopt and adapt the ideas that the course presents so that you develop your skills base and your Agile mind set.

Colin Brett BA (Hons), MA, MSc, MA, MAPPCP, TSTA (O), PCC, BACP Senior PractitionerColin Brett

He is the Founder and Director of Coaching Development, one of the UK’s foremost providers of accredited Coach training and has supported hundreds of individuals through their Associate, Professional and Master Coach levels and onward in their continuing professional development in supervision, mindfulness, transactional analysis and team coaching.

Among other accreditations Colin is a Professional Certified Coach with the International Coach Federation (there are approximately 250 in the UK), an accredited Coach Supervisor, a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst in Organisations (one of six in the UK), an NLP coach and a Senior Practitioner with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Ryan's work is about facilitating, consulting, coaching and training teams and mentoring individuals to work more effectively and productively together. His approach is a pragmatic blend of listening, consulting, mentoring, training, and facilitation.

He's an experienced trainer and facilitator and runs regular public and in-house trainings and workshops in Management 3.0, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Scrum, Kanban, and other lean and agile ways of working. 

Ryan holds an MBA from Warwick Business School where he wrote his dissertation comparing agile methods to traditional methods of management and workflow.

He's a trained coach with Coaching Development Ltd and subsequently served as a mentor on their programme. He also coaches clients individually at his residence in south east London and over Skype. 

Ryan's certified in action learning facilitation with Action Learning Centre.

He's worked in the UK, South Africa, Canada, Spain, Poland and Germany with industries spanning retail, supply chain, publishing, government, travel, cloud software, education, investment banking, wealth management, and FinTech. 

Ryan is a regular speaker at Agile conferences, and is co-organiser of the London Management 3.0 meetup group.
