Situation

Reports suggest that as coaching continues to establish itself as a ‘must have’ in organisations, the focus will be less on working with individuals alone, and more on coaching teams. However, few coaches are trained and qualified to work as team coaches, and there are even fewer who have experience of working with both virtual and in situ teams. At the same time, purchasers of coaching are becoming more clear about what coaching and team coaching are, and that a formal accreditation as a professional coach is probably not in itself sufficient for being an effective team coach.

Team coaching is significantly different from individual coaching and group coaching. It takes place in a context vastly different from one-to-one coaching. It requires a heightened psychological mindedness, an ability to work with the unseen and unspoken and an awareness of systems and their impact on teams. It also requires the ability to simultaneously hold multiple coachees in awareness, the ability to observe from a distance and yet stay in contact with oneself and the team members, and of course the proven ability to coach professionally. The programme described below addresses these needs.

The Learning Process

There are three 2-day Modules, and an on-going, online learning community. Module One sets the foundation for the training group to work as a learning community, provides definitions and distinctions and introduces models of group coaching. The second day shifts focus to team coaching and further defines the differences. Input is on the framing of the team and the behaviours and thinking of the team coach. We begin to access the wisdom of the learning group. Module Two enquires into your experiences of working with a virtual team since Module 1, and offers theory about the person-in-role, additional psychological models and exercises for understanding what happens in teams and what happens between people. The learning is also about yourself, others and what happens in between. Module Three continues the learning through experience and reflection, and brings in the system, the immediate and the further organisational context and the team-in-the-mind. It deepens the work around the forces and factors of the non-obvious.

Learning Objectives (selection)

At the end of this programme, you will be able to:

  • Be present in the moment and also take a meta perspective (helicopter view)
  • Name common pitfalls in team coaching and design ways of avoiding these
  • Recognise why and how the team coach slips out of role
  • Suggest ways of working with non-obvious forces and factors
  • Understand how to work in tandem with another team coach
  • Propose your own model of team coaching (the formal assessment)

Methodology and Training Philosophy

The training is primarily learning by doing. Tried and tested psychological theory is introduced and related to working with systems, teams and groups; most theory is followed by a practical experience. There is a resource list of podcasts, youtube clips and written material.

At the same time, learning is considered to be emergent and dynamic, and experience is regarded as valid data, from which new theory can be developed. Your facilitators believe that knowledge can be elicited and co-created and so you will be invited to reflect on your experience and learn how reflection and dialogue can lead to new understandings. We ask that you keep a Journal.

Experience

Following Module One, you are strongly encouraged to formally use one group coaching model with a coaching group over a period of time. You develop and run this as a project.

Between Modules One and Three, the learning group meets regularly as a virtual team which develops, runs and completes a real-life project. The roles of leader and team coach rotate in each meeting, so that everyone continues to have the experience of coaching a team.  Presence at these on line team meetings is a vital part of the training. Your learnings form a part of your Journal.

Certification

Coaching Development Ltd. will give a Certificate in Group, Team and Systems Coaching to participants who attend the 6 days’ training, attend 80%+ of the virtual meetings, keep a Journal and write a reflective summary at the end of the programme. 

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Certificate training carries 36 CCEU's (Core Competencies).

Participants and Trainers

This programme is open to coaches who have more than 65 hours’ formal coach training. If you wish to join this programme, please give details of your training on the application form. We would then like to have a short conversation with you before we confirm a place, of which there are a limited number.

It is taught by Colin Brett PCC and Leda Turai MCC. Colin and Leda are highly trained, qualified and experienced coaches and coach trainers. They are psychologically schooled, work in organisations and are pioneers in the coaching world. You can read more about them on our trainers’ page.

Venue, Dates and Investment

From our venue in Highbury, a new London programme will begin with Module One on 30th and 31st October, 2017 followed by Module Two on 27th and 28th November, 2017 and Module Three on 8th and 9th January, 2018.  The cost for the training is £2,800.00 + VAT. 

The time investment is the 6 days, plus an estimated ten 90-minute virtual team coachings between Module One and Three, and any time you want to spend on reading, etc. The formal assessment will be a description of your model of team coaching, with a reflective commentary on how this programme helped you develop your concept.
